1. Maca

After days or weeks of celebrating the holidays with friends and family—and enjoying a few too many slices of pie—it’s time to get back on the healthful eating wagon. If one of your resolutions is to lose a little jiggle from your wiggle, these metabolism-boosting superfoods can help.

Maca

Maca is a plant that grows in the highest plateaus of the Andes Mountains and has been cultivated for at least 3,000 years. Though maca is actually a root vegetable, it’s typically sold as a powder.

How it works: Maca promotes the use of glucose for energy in the bloodstream, which means less gets stored as fat. In a 2007 study, maca significantly improved glucose tolerance (low glucose tolerance is associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease) and lowered blood sugar levels in rats. Maca is also said to be an energy booster, which may help you squeeze in that morning workout.

How to use it: Maca powder can be blended in your morning smoothie.

Where to find it: Health food stores
