3 reasons to love asparagus

Besides being a wonderful source of nutrition, asparagus also makes for a delicious and healthy treat. A member of the lily family, asparagus has been used since the time of ancient Greece to heal and medically cleanse the body of toxins and diseases.

Here are three great reasons to love asparagus:

1. Fights disease
This vegetable is an excellent source of folate, a B vitamin that is needed to make DNA. Folate helps protect our cells and prevent changes in them in them that may lead to cancer. try a side of roasted or grilled asparagus with dinner tonight.

2. Beefs up immunity
Asparagus contains inulin, a prebiotic fibre, which helps stimulate the growth of probiotics (good bacteria) in the stomach. Probiotics lead to stronger immunity, as well as better digestion.

3. Cuts calories -- not flavour
A six-spear serving has just 20 calories and four grams of carbohydrates. Plus, it contains two grams of fibre, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels and ward off hunger pangs. make long strips using a vegetable peeler and toss the crunchy raw strands with your favourite vinaigrette.
