Hemp seeds: The superfood to add to your dishes

Seeds from the hemp plant—the stalks of which have long been harvested for clothing and rope—are celebrated for their high levels of essential fatty acids, protein and antioxidants. Here, what you need to know about this superfood's good-for-you benefits.

A healthy choice for the planet, hemp is a sustainable crop and Canadian-grown, too. Its broad leaves help naturally suppress weeds, which means no pesticides or herbicides are needed to successfully grow the plant. It is part of the cannabis family—but not to be confused with what is cultivated as marijuana.

THE BENEFITS

• Hemp seeds are a substantial source of easy-to-digest plant-based protein. In fact, they're a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids, making the seeds ideal for vegetarians.

• A source of healthy fats, the seeds contain omega-6 gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is important for heart health, hormone balance and healthy hair, skin and nails.

• The seeds are also a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce inflammation, improve circulation and lower the risk of heart disease.

• They're full of fibre, which helps stabilize your blood sugar, lower cholesterol, keep you regular and prevent bloating.
