Antioxidants
What are they? Antioxidants are powerful substances that protect us against free radicals, which are harmful molecules in our bodies. Don't fret. Free radicals come from pesticides, pollution and smoking, but they also occur naturally as we age.

Benefits: Free radicals damage your body's cells and can lead to premature aging, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants from the vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals in food help stop free radicals from attacking and damaging cells.

How much do I need? There's no consensus on how many antioxidants we need each day because there are so many different types. Your best bet is to enjoy a balanced diet.

Best sources: Fill up on colourful veggies and fruits (especially leafy greens, apples and berries); black and green tea; red kidney, black, soy and pinto beans; and whole grains.
