Sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement

Research shows that only nine per cent of Canadians are aware of the harmful effects that prolonged unprotected sun exposure has on their eyes. Over time, it can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration (which may even result in blindness) and skin cancer (10 per cent of skin cancers occur on the eyelids).

Young eyes are especially vulnerable to the sun’s damaging UV rays, with the most damage occurring before the age of 18.

"Kids should be wearing sunglasses at all times," says Rachel Hill-Campbell, an optician in Thorold, Ont. If they already wear prescription eyeglasses, they could opt for a pair of Transition Lenses, which transition from clear inside, to dark outside. For summer days at the lake or pool, look for prescription swim goggles with tinted lenses and UV protection, and even tinted snorkeling masks.

Melanoma is the focus of this year's National Sun Awareness Week, running from June 8 to 14. For more information, check out the Canadian Dermatology Association’s website at www.dermatology.ca.
