The right way to incorporate wallpaper into your home

Our home & style director, Ann Marie Favot, shares how to incorporate wallpaper into your home with confidence.

Q: I love wallpaper, but I lack the confidence to take the plunge. Where should I start?

Wallpapering is a fun way to make a statement, and anyone can do it! Keep the project manageable by picking a small space, such as a powder room or staircase.

If it’s a larger space like the master bedroom or dining room, paper a single wall; for maximum impact, choose the one that’s visible from the most angles (avoid obstructions like windows or doors).

Hanging wallpaper is relatively simple, but it requires attention to detail, so prepare by watching and reading a few how-tos and getting the right tools. Source the paper well in advance so it arrives in time; order extra to leave room for error. And follow the old adage: Measure twice, cut once.

Q: Isn't wallpaper pricey?

Affordable wallcoverings do exist. Home-improvement centres carry conservative patterns with mass appeal, plus the internet is great for sourcing more playful options. One-of-a-kind designer papers are worth considering, too, if it's a small space. Check out my favourite budget-friendly finds below.
