Crochet a striped boat-necked pullover

This boat-necked pullover is worked in openwork stripes. Instructions are written for Extra-Small (XS) size. Any changes for small (S), Medium (M) or Large (L) are written in brackets. If there is only one set of figures, it applies to all sizes. Standard abbreviations are used.

Recommended for crocheters with some experience.

You Need:
Patons Grace (50 g ball) pure cotton yarn as follows:

  • Main Colour (MC), 60104 Azure, 2(2,2,3) balls
  • Contrast Colour A (A), 60604 Terracotta, 2(2,2,3) balls
  • Contrast Colour B (B), 60603 Apricot, 2(2,2,3) balls
  • Contrast Colour C (C), 60450 Coral, 2(2,2,3) balls
  • Contrast Colour D (D), 60733 Peacock, 2(2,2,3) balls
  • 3.75 mm crochet hook or whichever size hook you need to produce the tension given below


    Tension
    22 sts and 12 rows = 4 ins (10 cm) in stripes pattern.

    Bust Measurement

    • Extra-Small - 32 ins (81.5 cm)
    • Small - 34 ins (86.5 cm)
    • Medium - 36 ins (91.5 cm)
    • Large - 38 ins(96.5 cm)

    Finished Bust Measurement

    • Extra-Small - 33-1/2 ins (85 cm)
    • Small - 36 ins (91.5 cm)
    • Medium - 38 ins (96.5 cm)
    • Large - 40 ins(101.5 cm)

    Pattern Stitch

    Row 1 (wrong side): Skip first 2 sts, [1 hdc in next st,ch 1,skip next st] to last st, 1 hdc in last st, ch 2. Turn.
    Row 2: Skip first hdc, [2 hdc in next ch 1 sp], ending with 1 hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch, ch 3. Turn.

    Stripes
    Rows 1 and 2:With A, work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 3: With B, work Row 1 of pat st.
    Rows 4 and 5: With C, work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 6: With D, work Row 2 of pat st.
    Rows 7 and 8: With MC, work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 9: With A, work Row 1 of pat st.
    Rows 10 and 11: With B, work Rows 2 and 1 of pat st.
    Row 12: With C, work Row 2 of pat st.
    Rows 13 and 14: With D , work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 15: With MC, work Row 1 of pat st.
    Rows 16 and 17: With A, work Rows 2 and 1 of pat st.
    Row 18: With B, work Row 2 of pat st.
    Rows 19 and 20: With C, work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 21: With D, work Row 1 of pat st.
    Rows 22 and 23: With MC, work Rows 2 and 1 of pat st.
    Row 24: With A, work Row 2 of pat st.
    Rows 25 and 26: With B, work Rows 1 and 2 of pat st.
    Row 27: With C, work Row 1 of pat st.
    Rows 28 and 29: With D, work Rows 2 and 1 of pat st.
    Row 30: With MC, work Row 2 of pat st.

    These 30 rows form stripes.

    Hdc2tog
    Yoh and draw up a loop in next hdc, draw up a loop in next hdc, yoh and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

    To Make:
    Notes
    To change colours, always work turning ch at end of row in new colour for next row; turning ch 2 counts as first hdc in next row.
    When working shaping, turning ch does not count as first st in next row.

    Back
    *With MC, ch 94(100,106,112).
    Row 1 (wrong side): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, [1 sc in each sc] to end of ch, ch 1. Turn. 93(99,105,111) sc.
    Row 2: [1 sc in each sc] to end of row, ch 1.
    Turn.
    Row 3: As Row 2, ending row with join A, ch 3. Turn.

    Proceed in stripes for 31 more rows, ending last row with ch 1. Turn.

    To shape armholes:
    Row 34 (right side): With A and keeping continuity of stripes, [sl st in next ch 1 sp,sl st in next hdc] 3(4,4,4) times, ch 2, proceed in stripes to last 6(8,8,8) sts, join B, ch 2. Turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
    Row 35: Hdc2tog, proceed in stripes to last 2 sts, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, join C, ch 2. Turn.
    Hdc2tog over first st and next ch 1 sp, proceed in stripes to last 2 sts, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, ch 2. Turn.

    Keeping continuity of stripes, rep last 2 rows 2(2,3,4) more times. 69(71,73,75) sts.

    Continue even in stripes for 13(15,13,13) more rows, working ch 1 for turning ch at end of last row.

    To shape shoulders:
    Next row (right side): Sl st in next hdc, [sl st in next ch 1 sp] 3 times, [1 sc,1 hdc] in next ch 1 sp, 2 hdc in each of next 1(1,2,2) ch 1 sps, 1 hdc in next hdc. Fasten off.

    With right side of work facing, skip next 24(25,24,25) ch 1 sps, join appropriate colour yarn to next hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in each of next 1(1,2,2) ch 1 sps, [1 hdc,1 sc] in next ch 1 sp, [sl st in next ch 1 sp,sl st in next hdc] 3 times. Fasten off.*

    Front
    Rep from * to * as given for Back.

    Sleeves
    With MC, ch 65(67,67,71).

    Row 1 (right side): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, [1 sc in each sc] to end of ch, ch 1. Turn. 64(66,66,70) sc.
    Row 2: [1 sc in each sc] to end of row, ch 1. Turn
    Row 3: [1 sc in each of first 10(10,10,11) sc, 2 sc in next sc] 5 times, [1 sc in each sc] to end of row, join D, ch 3. Turn. 69(71,71,75) sc.

    Beg on a Row 29 of stripes, work 2 rows even in stripes, ending last row with ch 1. Turn.

    Next row (right side): With A and keeping continuity of stripes, [sl st in next ch 1 sp,sl st in next hdc] 3 times, ch 2, proceed in stripes to last 6 sts, join B, ch 2. Turn, leaving rem sts unworked.
    Next row: Hdc2tog, proceed in stripes to last 2 sts, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, join C, ch 2. Turn.
    Next row: Hdc2tog over first st and next ch 1 sp, proceed in stripes to last 2 sts, hdc2tog over last 2 sts, ch 2. Turn.

    Keeping continuity of stripes, rep last 2 rows 2(2,2,3) more times, then last row once. 43(45,45,47) sts.

    Next row: [Hdc2tog] twice, proceed in stripes to last 4 sts, [hdc2tog] twice, ch 2. Turn.

    Rep last row 6(7,7,7) more times. 15 sts. Fasten off.

    To Finish:
    Using tapestry needle and yarn, sew shoulder seams, then sew in sleeves, matching stripes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Block; do not press.
