Easy plastic flower craft

Whether you make hundreds of flowers, or just a few, it's a fun way to recycle plastic dishes and cutlery – and to put some spring in your step.

You need:
• Plastic cups and plates (two sizes)
• Plastic spoons
• Pipe cleaners
• Pom-poms
• 1 m (3-foot) green bamboo garden stakes
• Green plastic twist ties (on spool)
• Permanent marker, scissors, X-acto knife
• Hot glue gun and glue

To make:
Daffodil
1. With scissors, cut 2.5 cm (1-inch) ring from paper cup. Apply hot glue to cut edge; centre and glue ring to large plate. Apply hot glue to top edge of ring; attach small plate to glued edge, centring on large plate.

2. Using small dab of hot glue, affix pom-pom to lip of cup. Apply hot glue around bottom of cup; attach cup to centre of small plate.

3. Liberally apply hot glue to top 15 cm (6 inches) of garden stake; adhere to back of flower. Apply additional glue if necessary.

Blue daisy
1. Using scissors, cut small plate at quarter intervals, starting at edge and stopping 2.5 cm (1 inch) from centre. Trim corners to form petals. Using X-acto knife, cut two 5 mm (1/4-inch) slits, 1 cm (1/2 inch) apart, in centre of plate; bend pipe cleaner in half and, from back of plate, push one end through each slit. Twist and curl pipe cleaners. Using dab of hot glue, adhere pom-pom to centre of plate.

2. Apply hot glue to back of small plate, over pipe cleaner; affix to large plate.

3. Liberally apply hot glue to top 15 cm (6 inches) of garden stake; adhere to back of flower. Apply additional glue if necessary.

Primrose
1. Using scissors, cut small plate at quarter intervals, starting at edge and stopping 2.5 cm (1 inch) from centre. Trim corners to form petals. Using X-acto knife, cut two 5 mm (1/4-inch) slits, 1 cm (1/2 inch) apart, in centre of plate; bend pipe cleaner in half and, from back of plate, push one end through each slit, pulling almost but not quite all the way through. Twist and curl pipe cleaners. If desired, adhere pom-pom to centre of plate with dab of hot glue. Repeat with second plate.

2. Push garden stake through pipe cleaner loop at back of one flower, pulling pipe cleaner from front to tighten if needed. Apply hot glue to affix stake to plate below pipe cleaner loop. Affix second flower in similar manner so that flowers are back-to-back, applying additional hot glue as necessary to secure.

Crocus
1. Fold over 2.5 cm (1 inch) at end of pipe cleaner and twist together; repeat on other end. Repeat 3 more times, for total of 4 pipe cleaners. Gather pipe cleaners together and bend roughly in half, twisting pipe cleaners loosely to form single unit.

2. Apply hot glue to top of handle of plastic spoon; adhere pipe cleaner bundle to handle, overlapping loose pipe cleaner ends with bowl of spoon.

3. Repeat with 3 more spoons to form "flower".

4. Cut two 20 cm (8-inch) lengths of twist tie; twist around spoon handles and curl as desired.
