Retro crocheted mittens

Youth-size or size small ladies' crocheted mittens are worked from top to bottom in rnds of hdc throughout. Cuff is crocheted with fpdc and bpdc and circle design in sc.  Standard abbreviations are used.

You need:
• 1 ball (100g) Patons Classic Merino Wool 100 per cent pure new wool, Peacock No. 00218 (Colour A)
• 1 ball (100g) Patons Classic Merino Wool 100 per cent pure new wool, Aran No. 00202 (Colour B)
• 4.5mm crochet hook OR whichever size you require to obtain the tension given below
• Stitch marker

Tension
20 sts and 26 rows = 4”x4” square

Thumb (colour A):
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to join in ring. 
Rnd 1:  Ch 1, 8 hdc in ring, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (8)
Rnd 2:  Ch 1, hdc to end of rnd. (8)
Rnd 3-7: Repeat rnd 2, fasten off.

Top of hand (Colour A):

Ch 4, sl st to first ch to join in ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc in ring, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (8)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st until end of rnd, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (16)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, [1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] until end of rnd, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (24)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, [1 hdc in next 7 st, 2 hdc in next st] until end of rnd, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (27)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each st, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (27)
Rnd 6-15: Repeat rnd 5, fasten off. Place stitch marker on last st.

Join thumb (colour A):
Rnd 16: Join yarn at stitch marker on hand, ch 1, hdc in next 5 st, 5 hdc of thumb, sk next 3 st on hand, 19 hdc until end of rnd on hand, sl st in top of first ch, turn. (29)
Rnd 17: Ch 1, hdc in next 12 st, skip one st, hdc in next 5 st, skip one st, hdc until end of rnd, sl st to top of first ch, turn. (27)
Rnd 18: Ch 1, hdc in next 12 st, skip one st, hdc in next 5 st, skip one st, hdc until end of rnd, sl st to top of first ch, turn. (25)
Rnd 19: Ch 1, hdc in next 20 st, skip one st, hdc in next 7 st, skip one st, hdc until end of rnd, sl st to top of first ch, turn. (23)
Rnd 20-21: Ch 1, hdc in each st, sl st to to of first ch, fasten off.  Place stitch marker on last st. (23)
*Note:  the 3 st in the hand and the thumb that were not worked will be stitched together later

Cuff (colour B)
Rnd 1:  Join yarn at stitch maker on hand, ch 2, dc in each st (24)
Rnd 2:  Ch 2, [fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st] repeat until end of rnd (24)
Rnd 3:  Repeat rnd 2, fasten off.

Circle design (colour B):
Large (make 1):
Ch 10, sl st to first ch to join in ring.
Rnd 1:  Ch 1, 16 sc in ring, sl st in top of first ch, fasten off. (16)

Medium (make 2):
Ch 6, sl st to first ch to join in ring.
Rnd 1:  Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, sl st in top of first ch, fasten off. (10)

Small (make 2):
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to join in ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st in top of first ch, fasten off. (6)

Finishing:
• Weave in loose ends
• Turn mitten inside out and stitch the 3 st of the thumb to the 3 st of the hand
• With matching thread, sew circles onto top of mittens in desired pattern.

Designer tips:
• For longer length in the hands, you can repeat rnd 16 until desired length
• For longer length in the thumb, you can repeat rnd 7 of the thumb until desired length
• For wider mittens, you can use a larger gauge crochet hook or repeat rnd 4 of the hand pattern until desired width is achieved.  For a wider thumb, increase number of stitches in rnd 2 until desired width is achieved.
