Affordable—and stylish—décor ideas for an organized entryway

Our Home & Style director Ann Marie Favot reveals how she preps her front entrance for the busy school year ahead.

Whether or not you have children, September always seems to arrive with that back-to-school sense of renewal. It's the time of year that prompts me to look at my home with new eyes and evaluate which areas are working and which aren't.

Inevitably, the entryway is top of the list, and organization is top of mind. As summer turns to fall, the flip-flops and sun hats crowding my cramped foyer give way to rain boots and heavy sweaters, so an annual overhaul is on the books. I'm a sucker for new boxes, baskets and bins that beckon from store shelves, silently promising to change my life and make my rooms clutter-free.

In the ongoing effort to bring order to my household chaos, I collect organizing tools like other people collect shoes or handbags. Colour-coded tags, label makers, bags, cubbies—I love them all. It's so satisfying to go through the things I've inadvertently gathered and purge, and it's so much fun to rearrange what's left over in my new containers—until next September rolls around.

I love this entryway. It looks so fresh and clean, and it speaks to my favourite organizing ideas, from hooks to baskets. I particularly like the cubbies all lined up in a row—especially the one that has strings attached to hold mail—which offers both spots for the necessities plus display space for pretty pieces. Best of all is the fact that these products are super inexpensive and the ideas are really easy to achieve yourself with a little elbow grease. It's win-win!

Tip: A bench in the front hall is essential if you have the space. It's hands down one of the most practical—and stylish—pieces you can own.
