12 year old hockey player hurt in scuffle involving referee

12 year old Kainen Bell, is recovering at home with a cast on his arm after a he was injured during a hockey tournament in Winnipeg on Sunday. Pretty typical news, right? Kids play hockey. Kids get hurt. But what if I told you that he is recovering at home after the referee broke his wrist. Seems like a whole different story now, doesn't it? Actually, I don't think it's that black and white. [HTML1] Winnipeg police said they were called about a fight at the Southdale Community Centre at about 2pm on Sunday. A video taken at the event and posted here shows referees stepping in to stop a scuffle between Bell and an opposing player. After the players seperated and began making their ways back to their team benches, Bell slashed the opponent on the back of the legs with his stick. As the two players began fighting again, a referee skated in to break it up. He grabbed Bell but appeared to slip, knocking him to the ground as they both fell. "The ref fell on me and my hand, like, bent back", said Bell. "The he landed on it and then it bent all the way back." The video then goes on to show Bell's assistant coach run onto the ice and go after the referee. Now Kainen's parents want the referee to face criminal charges. "I don't want to see any other kids manhandled like that. No kid should be grabbed like that". They are planning on speaking to a lawyer. Take a look at the video and tell me what your thoughts are on this situation. For me, personally, I don't think the referee meant to slam the boy into the ice. It looks to me that he slipped and lost his balance. I believe he was doing what he needed to in trying to break up the fight. And it sickens me to see the insanity in the stands. We, as parents, fans and spectators should be embarrassed that minor hockey has come to this. Where is the respect for the game?
