Oscar-nominated Films For Families

If my child was judging the Academy Award nominated movies, Frozen would win everything. Best film, best song, best merchandise (though that might be a tie with Despicable Me 2. She does love minions). If you missed it, here are the five nominees for Best Animated Feature Film: The Croods Despicable Me 2 (The film is also up for Original Song for "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.) Ernest & Celestine Frozen (It is also up for Original Song for "Let it Go".) The Wind Rises (This is the third nomination for Hayao Miyazaki. His films are generally appreciated by an older audience.) If you are wondering if these films are right for your family, Common Sense Media is a good source of reviews on what to expect in the films. Canada was shut out of the nominations this year, but in the past we have done well in the Animated Short Film category. If you want to check out some of those nominees and winners, they are available in the National Film Board of Canada's online screening room for free. I recommend my daughter's favourite, The Cat Came Back. Visit the Oscar website for the full list of nominees. The Academy Awards airs Sunday, March 2. Photo: iStock
