Tax time: Mark your calendar

I'm a calendar girl. Got ya! Not that kind of calendar girl! I'm a calendar girl, as in, I love to keep track of events on calendars. The calendar on my fridge lists the boys' school schedules, the calendar on my computer lists meetings, project due dates and upcoming reports, and the calendar in my purse reminds me of personal appointments, birthdays and – the big one – tax time preparation. It's time.... [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia."]English: A calendar showing the leap year day....[/caption] Don't get caught off guard by these deadlines. February 29: The last day to make personal and spousal RRSP contributions that apply to the 2011 taxation year. March 31: The deadline to file a trust income tax return for a trust with a December 31 year end. April 30: The deadline to file a personal income tax return for the 2011 taxation year and remit the balance due, if any. Get started early. And gather your documents together, if applicable:
  • A copy of last year's return (remember your spouse's too)
  • 2010 Notice of Assessment
  • Note details of any changes to your status, such as marriage, separation, divorce or widowed, births or deaths
  • Universal child care benefits
  • Employment income forms
  • Pension income forms
  • Investment income forms
  • Income from trusts such as mutual fund investments
  • Income from employment insurance
  • Worker's compensation/social assistance payments
  • Payments received for spousal support
  • RRSP contributions
  • Charitable donations
  • Tuition fees/education amount
  • Interest paid on student loans
  • Professional dues and union dues
  • Child care receipts
Don't you want to be a calendar girl or guy, too?
