Favourite colours

Everyone has a favourite colour (or two). Our choices often state the obvious: for instance, if you prefer pink, you're quite likely the flirty and feminine type, but if you love green best, there's a good chance you've got a sporty, outdoorsy side.

When we work our favourite colours into our daily lives through wardrobe or home-decor choices, they're a source of inspiration and pleasure. When choosing colours, however, don't forget your birth month colour.

Birth month colors
Formulated by Michele Bernhardt, a New York City–based healer, astrologer and author of Colorstrology: What Your Birthday Color Says About You (Chronicle Books), colorstrology is a system combining elements of astrology, numerology, and colour theory.

"I based it on the sun's position, what your ruling planet is, the numerology of your birthday, your element – whether fire, air, earth or water – and combined all these elements together to identify a color," explains Bernhardt. For convenience, Bernhardt matched these colours to the design-world's pantone colour reference system.

How to use colorstrology
Incorporating your birth month colour into your life will make you feel more positive and balanced, says Bernhardt. "The colours definitely affect us," he says.

"Wear your birthday colour, choose it in makeup, or in your home. Try painting a room, or paint a door in your home," says Bernhardt. It could also be used in accessories, such as purses, shoes, gym bags or workout gear, as well as in home accessories like cushions, window coverings, tableware or artwork.

The amount you use is up to you, so don't worry if you're not crazy about your birth month colour – a little can go a long way. Just work it in via a smaller accessory such as change purse or keychain. "Even thread!" says Bernhardt. Why not sew a secret running stitch in your birthday colour into the lining of your jacket?
