Music gifts to Get, Give and Play

By Miriam Osborne. Advertiser SPOTLIGHT

Amid all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, things often get pretty hectic and stressful. One way to slow down and enjoy all the joys this season offers is simple: Just pop in your favourite holiday album, sit back with a hot cup of cocoa and enjoy!

Growing up in my home, Christmas music was a huge part of our celebration.

From classics like Elvis Presley singing The Christmas Song to Boney M –
a personal holiday favourite – singing Mary's Boy Child (Oh My Lord), holiday music was as much a part of Christmas as Santa and his reindeer. And we started playing them as early as possible! Now, with a home of my own, I still play Christmas music to me get into the spirit! I still listen to my all-time favourites. But a number of newer holiday songs have crept their way onto my play list – from Susan Boyle’s Silent Night and Mariah Carey’s O Holy Night to Céline Dion’s take on a holiday staple, The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire).

Of course, music is a lot more than just Christmas – it plays an integral role in our lives, even when we don’t realize it. So why not pass on the wonderful gift of music to your loved ones this holiday? Click here to create a shopping list of music that will make the holidays memorable for you and everyone you love, or open the play list to enjoy them right now.

Those great songs come from albums that are perfect for everyone on your list (and might make the perfect little gift for you, too!). Here are some suggestions to help get you started:

For your sister, why not give her the gift of Alicia Keys’s newest album, The Element Of Freedom? Alicia Keys is one artist who captures an old-school vibe and makes it her own, and her fourth album is no exception. Pre-order this album before this album on December 15th, and enjoy surefire hits like "Doesn't Mean Anything" and “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”. You can never go wrong with Alicia Keys!

Beyoncé does it again with her third full-length solo album, I AM… SASHA FIERCE. Dance away to songs like “Single Ladies” and “Halo,” or slow down for “If I Were A Boy.” This album may be Beyoncé’s most personal one yet, as she co-wrote every song. Talk about a real talent! The new deluxe version also includes the new smash single, “Video Phone,” featuring the always-eclectic Lady Gaga. Perfect for any pop lover on your list.

The Greatest Hits from Rockers Foo Fighters is a perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list. With classics like “Best of You” and “Everlong,” this compilation spans 15 years of success. Also included are two new gems, “Word Forward” and the No.1 Rock single “Wheels.” Get the CD or enjoy the deluxe version with a DVD that showcases the great videos that go with each song.

Neil Diamond’s latest album, A Cherry Cherry Christmas is a must-have that the whole family will enjoy. Diamond, whose music career spans five decades, delivers classics like “Joy To The World,” “White Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland.” Pop this album in on Christmas morning and enjoy a little nostalgia with a Diamond touch.
