Slideshow: Building schools in China

In spite of no electricity and crumbling buildings, schoolchildren in China's poor Gansu province take their studies seriously.

This bright new school built with funds raised by Canadian school children through Free the Children is overflowing with students, many of whom couldn't attend before because their old school was unsafe. Three students squeeze into desks meant for two in order to accommodate everyone.

On good-weather days, the classroom moves outdoors.

This old school desperately needs replacing. In some villages, the roofs of old schools have collapsed causing injury and even death.

Canadian teachers would be impressed with the attentiveness of these Chinese schoolchildren, who are expected to follow teachers' instructions to the letter. Rote learning is the norm and much of the curriculum is based on classical Chinese stories.
