Ask yourself, Do I really need it?
This question is particularly important when it comes to electronics, says Tzeporah Berman, cofounder of ForestEthics and PowerUp Canada. "The consumption and disposal rates of electronics are a huge environmental issue," she says. If you do need it, look at warranties, the life expectancy of the product, and whether it is mainly metal as opposed to plastic, which breaks easier.
"I also look to see whether I can buy something used," adds Berman. "Often, what we want exists on the used market and may even have a longer life span." Back in the day, products were often made of more durable, higher-quality materials.
