Let’s get outside, Canada!
I’m sitting here writing this month’s column in my favourite room overlooking the backyard, and I’m just itching to get out there. The sun is shining, our mischievous cat, Itty-Bitts, is sunning herself on the back deck, my husband is weeding and trimming, and our dog, Scooter McGee, is napping under our 100-year-old black ash tree. It’s all making me nostalgic for the simple pleasures of summers from my childhood (swimming in the lake, nights spent around a blazing campfire), but I’m also content knowing that summer can still give me that warm fuzzy feeling.
In this issue, Cheryl Embrett writes about 50 simple summer pleasures that you and your family can enjoy – and the good news is that they’re all budget-friendly, if not outright free. Whether you’re camping, cottaging or staying in the city, you’ll find many ways to celebrate the blissful weather and good times with family and friends. That’s what this August issue is all about.
Join us as we continue with our cross-Canada food series. This month we’re featuring the culinary delights of Nova Scotia and if you’re a seafood lover the chowder will be a definite favourite. Whether you’re in a hurry to get supper on the table or want to host a leisurely dinner with family and friends, this issue has something for everyone’s tastebuds. If you’re a baker, you’ll love our in-season fruit pie story. If you’re crafty and in the mood for a picnic, our craft guru Austen Gilliland’s picnic blanket is a must-have. If you love gardening or just looking at gorgeous gardens, Sonia Villeneuve’s beautiful paradise on the rugged, rocky landscape of the Canadian Shield in Sturgeon Falls, Ont., is breathtaking.
We’re also proud to introduce in this issue a few members of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team, who, at time of writing, are ranked No. 6 in the world and have a good chance of winning big at the World Cup. If you have a youngster who’s interested in playing soccer, the outstanding young women profiled in this story will definitely inspire.
Enjoy!
