For many of us, September is the start of a new year, so it's appropriate that our theme for this issue is "turning over a new leaf." Most of us have taken our summer vacations, the kids go back to school; it's the perfect time to make a few changes in your life, big or small.
This month's C'est la Vie column features the reflections of Miriam Osborne, a former senior editor at Canadian Living. She traded in her full-time job for the halls of academia. Talk about turning over a new leaf!
We were fortunate to interview Sarah McLachlan, who, after an 11-year hiatus, has been busy resurrecting Lilith Fair, which is touring around the world and raising money for women's causes. I'm sure you'll also be inspired by the changes she's made in her personal life.
This month you'll find ideas throughout every section of the magazine and our website that may inspire you to try something new. In Everyday Matters you'll read about Cleaning Up the Country – maybe there's a cleanup initiative in your community that you would like to kick-start. Or it could be as basic as getting rid of clothes you haven't worn in years. Need a change in your look? Try red lipstick. Need to boost your energy levels? Look no further than "Get Your Best Sleep Ever" for some great techniques to get some z's. And don't miss "September: Ease the Stress", which will help you get through the traditionally stressful month on a calmer note.
Finally, if you have a pet that likes to rock around the house all night, creating all manner of racket, flip to "Wake-Up Call" for fresh tips on how to settle down your four-legged friend. I have my own to-do list to help me turn over a new leaf.
• Clean out my closets. I have a fairly small house and I take up three of the five closets.
• Play the piano. First I have to buy one. Then I have to start playing again after a 25-year break.
• Learn to bake. OK, that will require me to take classes. The one in my life who will be happiest is my dog, Scooter McGee, who is always nearby when I'm in the kitchen. (Me and my electric mixer – not pretty. This could also require a more regimented cleaning routine...)
• Lastly, I plan to have some noninvasive work done on my face. It maybe isn't everyone's cup of tea, but if I don't do it, I'll never know. I've commandeered my friend and colleague Karen Kwinter (fondly nicknamed Kiwi) to join me on this adventure. (I promise not to do anything too dramatic.)
Have an inspired day.
