Three things are top of mind as I sit down to write this column. First and foremost: the Winter Olympics. The Games are one of my absolute favourite things to follow – and the fact that this year they're being held in our own country, in beautiful British Columbia, makes me especially proud.
I'm also considering taking a long-overdue vacation this winter, and that's giving me a certain buoyancy that I welcome. Perhaps I'll travel to a part of Canada I've never been to before, or maybe I'll just stay at home and spend a good part of my time curled up in front of the television in my favourite red flannel pajamas.
One thing I'm definitely keeping in mind is continuing my 20-plus-year-old tradition of cross-stitching a Valentine's Day gift for my husband – only this year I'll somehow work in the Olympics theme. Hmm, how about, "I luge you!" My family and friends have long followed this wacky tradition of mine. (I think it's more humorous to them than to my husband, Greg, who puts up with this ritual – along with the snickering and giggling of every visitor who makes a point of asking to see my once-a-year creations – often crafted on the band of his underwear.)
I'm sure you'll enjoy reading about the Olympic moms featured in this issue, but I hope you also catch them on TV when they participate in the Games in Whistler and Vancouver this month. These amazing women have worked hard: competing, travelling and training, and – most of all – switching between being elite athletes and dedicated moms. Imagine the courage, commitment and determination it must take to juggle the dual roles. I urge you to also consider and congratulate the families and friends who've supported these women and helped make their dreams come true.
Valentine's Day, whether you're in a romantic relationship or single, is a time for celebration. In the Febrary issue, you'll read about one couple, Sarah and Jeff Lennox, who have something incredible to celebrate: Jeff's life. Just over a year ago, 28-year-old Jeff suffered a heart attack at home and, thanks to Sarah's prompt call to 911 and her CPR skills, Jeff is alive today. (I can definitely relate to Sarah's story, as my husband also suffered a heart attack in 2008 and survived, owing to the quick thinking of his colleagues, to whom I'll be forever grateful.) February is heart-health month and, if you haven't before, think about those around you and consider taking a CPR course. Who knows whose life you could save?
Remember, love isn't just about romance. It's also about the connections and bonds we have with family and friends. I don't know about you, but I feel pretty darned lucky in that regard. If you have special people in your life, don't forget to tell them you love them every once in a while. It will warm their hearts and yours.
Until next time.
