I read with interest "Get the Gas Out" ("Beans, Beans, Healthy and Lean," March).

My mother had a simple method for reducing the gas: When cooking any kind of dried bean, bring to boil; add a tablespoon of baking soda (water will create a green-tinged foam for a couple of minutes). Pour off all water; rinse beans well. Start over by adding clean water and continue to cook until beans are done. Most of the gas has been eliminated.

I receive your magazine every month as a gift from my son and daughter-in-law. As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, I find the recipes useful and doable. The fashions are interesting, and I appreciate the style and beauty tips.
