Grateful for the article in August's issue about memoir-writing, one reader shares a resource to make starting your own life story a bit more manageable.

The article on writing your memoirs in the August issue ("The Story of Your Life") was informative and served to renew my interest in writing down my stories. While my mother was still alive, I encouraged her to tell me about her childhood and to write down some of her memories. Her stories help to make the people, places and things of her generation into "real" people and events.

I also recommend a book written by a Canadian author from the Owen Sound, Ont., area that is a good guide to beginning writing memoirs. It is Saving Your Life: A Guide to Writing Your Life Story (Ginger, 2001) by Glenys Stow.
