This letter is in response to Jennifer Power Scott's story, A Monster in our Midst. I had the same experience when I was nine years old from a family friend. It's terrible that when we were young that our parents didn't give us the education that we needed to protect ourselves.
I'm 47 and it is still hard to keep the memory out of my head. The worst part was last year that person was in the same nursing home as my mother, and I wasn't aware. On my Mom's first day, we had lunch at a table not knowing that he was sitting at the same table. I was having a conversation with a child molestor from my past. We didn't know he was there. He is 81 years old, but it still didn't matter.
When I found out it was him, I immediately asked my Mom to be moved to another room. Every week when I drove to see my Mom, I arrived there before meal time, and would only stay until the meal started and the left. This was no way to spend my visit or the drive to see her. She was there for seven months until we were able to get her moved to where I am living now. The thoughts of why and how never go away.
It must have been really difficult to write Jennifer's story.
