Reader's story: Lunch money

"I'd be happy to know my children are getting a full lunch versus our standard turkey sandwich, which often goes uneaten."

Thank you for the article "Canada Needs a National Child Nutrition Program Now!" (October). When my four-year-old headed off to junior kindergarten last fall, I was baffled: I had to pack a lunch for him?

When I was growing up in the United States, my school had a lunch program, as did every school that I was aware of. The cafeteria was staffed by four women, who cooked mostly homemade meals. They were bland, but hot and universally eaten. Part of the cost was paid by a lunch ticket. The remainder was covered by the local school tax and government subsidies. I'd be happy to pay to know my children are getting a full lunch versus our standard turkey sandwich, which often goes uneaten.

With two working parents in so many households, it's hard to imagine many of our kids are enjoying the meals their growing bodies need.
