I just wanted to write a letter of appreciation for your Easy Chocolate Cake recipe ("Party Cakes," July). When I discovered it I knew I had to whip it up for dessert that night.

My youngest son has a severe nut/peanut allergy, and a surprising number of box mixes are not nut-free. This was easy to make with things I had on hand (but I did substitute white wine vinegar for the cider vinegar). I passed the recipe on to my friends, one with a child with egg and milk allergies, another who is a vegan. The lack of eggs and milk make it perfect for them.

Thanks again for the terrific recipe. It's gone into my favourite recipe book so it's always on hand.
