I was thrilled to see a section on scoliosis in your March issue, "Gotta Know: Scoliosis." I was diagnosed when I was 13 years old, and ended up needing surgery to correct it.

Very few people even knew what scoliosis was when I was diagnosed, so it's great to see more information being printed about it. I have an additional suggestion for home screening. I never had any symptoms of scoliosis, and was diagnosed only when I had to go to the emergency room for an unrelated reason (while the doctor was listening to my breathing on my back, he noticed that my spine didn't feel straight).

I recommend that parents run a finger down their child's spine to see whether it's straight, as sometimes doing it by eyesight alone won't reveal the scoliosis
