It's the day that should be my son's first birthday, Oct. 17, 2008, and I find Kathy Gebel's essay, "In the Stillness of My Heart," in your November issue. I lost my son Joseph Gabriel in the eighth month of my pregnancy. His heart stopped, for reasons unknown. It was a complete and sudden shock. The pregnancy was without complications, as were my previous two pregnancies, one with twins. My family doctor counselled me that having three young children already would slow down the grieving process. I was not prepared, though, for the grief my five-year-old daughter would experience while I was trying to deal with my own.
I relived all the feelings that Kathy described, and was comforted by her willingness to share. She reassured me that I am not alone in this, and that, though the sadness will never completely go away, the memory of my son is something I will always have and be able to share with his father, his sister and his brothers. Thank you.
