Celebrate the long northern summer evenings with these things to do in Alberta's capital.

Old Strathcona
Best explored on foot, Edmonton's Old Strathcona district dates back to the 1890s. Make a stop at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market on 83rd Avenue at 103rd Street (open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) to pick up fresh local produce for a weekend picnic.

The International Street Performers Festival
From July 6–15, at Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmontonians and visitors are invited to check out Edmonton's International Street Performers Festival. There are ticketed events, but there will also be onsite, roving entertainment. For more information, call 780-425-5162.

Heritage Festival
This year the Heritage Festival runs from August 4 to 6 at Edmonton's William Hawrelak Park. This year there are 58 pavilions representing more than 70 cultures, where you can see creative performances, shop for crafts, artwork and clothing, or chat with people eager to tell you a little about their cultural roots and their present-day communities in Canada. And one of the biggest draws is the food -- this year's menu offers everything from bannock (Aboriginal) to bulgogi (Korean) to baklava, or baklawa, varieties of which are offered in several different pavilions -- you're just going to have to sample each one!

River City Shakespeare Festival
Although there is typically a fixed charge for this event, which runs from June 26 to July 22, Tuesdays are "Pay what you can" performances at Hawrelak Park. This year's plays are The Winter's Tale and Two Gentlemen of Verona; both provide an excellent introduction to Shakespeare for the whole family. For more information, call 780-425-8086.

Telus World of Science -- Edmonton
Formerly known as the Odyssium, the Telus World of Science is split into four basic areas (space, the human body, forensic science, the environment) and gives kids a hands-on approach to learning. It will come as no surprise to most parents that one of the favourites is the Gross Out Gallery. Admission runs $10.95 for adults, $8.95 for kids (13–17 years old) and $7.95 for younger kids (3–12 years old). There's also a special family pass for $38.95 (2 adults, 4 children/youth).
