City guide: Fredericton

By Dee Van Dyk

Have some old-fashioned family fun listening to storytellers in Barracks Square and watching movies under the stars.
What to do in Fredericton, New Brunswick

Spooned against the gentle curve of the St. John River, the peninsular city of Fredericton offers a bouquet of both reasonably priced and free options for families. If you're from outside the province, this friendly city even provides free downtown visitor parking passes (for three days) for out-of-province visitors. Just stop by the Fredericton Tourism Visitor Information Centre (City Hall, 397 Queen Street) and present your out-of-province driver's license for verification.

Tell me a story
On Wednesday evenings (7:30 pm) in July and August, bundle the family up and head to Barracks Square, where master storytellers captivate the entire family with story-time fun for free. Call 506-460-2129 for details.

Movies under the stars

Introduce -- or reintroduce -- the family to classic films every Sunday from June to September in Barracks Square, Historic Garrison District (at Queen and Carleton Streets). Movies start at dusk (about 9 p.m.) and visitors are invited to check out the Historic Garrison District for complimentary chairs!

Rainy day? Swim indoors
On a day when you can't make it to the beach, burn off the kids' energy by taking them to the Fredericton Indoor Pool -- just $2.75 per adult and $1.75 per child. Call 506-460-2273 for details.

Steal of a deal: Tons of fun and change from a ten
Fredericton has a fistful of awesomely innovative ideas for kids, such as:

A Day in a Soldier's Life -- A Children's Day Adventure
For this adventure, kids “enlist” in a 90 minute tour that starts with them suiting up in a soldier's tunic for a tour of the barracks and guardhouse. Drill instruction follows and participants are issued a photo and certificate. Just $7 per child. For details, call 1-888-888-4768.

Haunted Hikes
A lantern tour through downtown Fredericton introduces kids ($8) and adults ($13) to Fredericton's historic ghosts. Tours start at the Coach House and run Monday through Saturday at dusk. For details, call 506-457-1975.
