What's a Haligonian?

Haligonian is the word used to describe a resident of Halifax. If you didn't know that, maybe there's more about Halifax you don't know, including some spectacular family fun hot spots.

Privateer's Warehouse
Arrrrrrr, there be pirates in Halifax. Check out the Privateer's Warehouse, which served as a storage point for pirate booty. The Privateer's Warehouse is one of a group of restored buildings along Upper Water Street built between 1800 and 1905.

Hemlock Ravine Walking and Hiking Trail
Hemlock Ravine, located on Kent Avenue, off the Bedford Highway, sports a seven-kilometre hard-surfaced trail that cuts through an old-growth forest with 350-year-old hemlock stands, wildflowers, birds and a heart-shaped pond. This trail is partially wheelchair accessible.

Point Pleasant Park
Park your car for free at the Harbour Lookoff because cars aren't allowed in the 75-hectare Point Pleasant Park. Pack your picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of the Point Pleasant picnic sites after a hike through some of the 39 kilometres of nature trails, or a romp at the beach.

Tip: Many of Point Pleasant's trails are wheelchair accessible.

Steal of a Deal: Discovery Centre
The mandate of the Discovery Centre is to stimulate an understanding and enjoyment of science and technology through interactive experiences. Current interactive exhibits include Carnivale Incredible, where you can take a walk through an exciting midway of hands-on exhibits that will challenge your skills, including your sense of balance, reaction time and adaptability. Step right up!. Admission for adults is $7.50 and kids pay $5.

Titanic Grave Site
On a more somber note, but of interest to history and film buffs, is Fairview Cemetery, eternal resting place to 121 victims of the Titanic tragedy. If there are teenage girls in your family entourage, you might want to stop at grave marker 227, labeled "J Dawson," the inspiration for Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the 1997 film Titanic.

Peggy's Cove
Forty kilometres west of Halifax is Peggy's Cove, one of the most visited sites in the Maritimes. Postcard-perfect Peggy's Cove is home to only 60 residents, but attracts nearly 650,000 visitors annually.

Tip: If you visit Peggy's Cove, go before 10 a.m. and beat the biggest rush of tourists.
