Discover Canada: New Brunswick

From some of the world's oldest mountains (in the Appalachian Range) to the four-story-high tides in the Bay of Fundy, it's no surprise New Brunswick calls itself the province of natural wonders. To help you plan your next vacation, we've picked a few of the top family-friendly attractions and activities in New Brunswick.

Aquarium and Marine Centre, Shippagan
Check out the blue lobster and other fish oddities at this public aquarium, where you can see more than 100 species of fish and invertebrates. Get up close and personal at the touch tank, filled with molluscs, sea cucumbers and more. Make it an educational experience with an audiovisual presentation on the history of the local fisheries.
Where to stay: Ask about the family packages at Le Chateau Bathurst in nearby Bathurst.

Crystal Palace, Moncton
The whole family will have fun at Crystal Palace, the only indoor and outdoor amusement park in Atlantic Canada. There are rides and games for all ages, including roller coasters, a ferris wheel and bumper boats.
Where to stay: A family-fun package from the Crystal Palace Hotel takes care of accommodations and entertainment, or you can book a family-size unit at the Beacon Light Motel.

Kouchibouguac National Park of Canada, Kouchibouguac
In the summer, hike, bike and camp at Kouchibouguac National Park. In the winter, cross-country ski and snowshoe across the coastal plains. While at the park, keep your eyes open for the fantastic range of species that make their home in the park, from amphibians and birds to rare plants and reptiles.
Where to stay: Choose from condo-chalets, cottages or motel rooms at Kouchibouguac Restaurant, Motel & Chalets.

Science East, Fredericton
There are over 100 exhibits at New Brunswick's only science centre, where learning is made fun with hands-on activities such as interacting with exotic insects and creating mini-tornadoes. The centre is located in the former York County Jail, many of whose original features have been preserved and turned into interactive exhibits highlighting the histories of some of the prison's most notorious inmates.
Where to stay: Relax in your room with free DVD rentals at the Amsterdam Inn or take a dip in the heated outdoor pool at the Coastal Inn.

Cherry Brook Zoo, Saint John
Tigers, monkeys and zebras -- oh, my! This zoo deals only in exotic and endangered animal species and houses over 38 species and more than 100 animals. Learn about what species are endangered and why at the Endangered Species Awareness Centre. Pack a lunch to eat in the picnic area.
Where to stay: The rooms and suites at the Admiral's Quay come equipped with their own kitchens.

Reversing Falls, Saint John
This natural phenomenon can make for a whole day of fun. The Reversing Falls is a battle of the tides, between the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River. Twice a day, the river is forced to change directions and flow upstream. Be there for both low tide and high tide and don't miss the informative film at the Reversing Falls Rooftop Theatre. You can also take in the view from the water on a jet boat or join one of the sightseeing tours.
Where to stay: The Fundy Bay Motel is conveniently located near the Reversing Falls and other outdoor attractions, including Irving Nature Park.
