Rediscover romance in Eastern Canada

By Dee Van Dyk

This spring whisk your partner away to Ottawa, Quebec City or Saint John.

Canada's diversity of geography and ethnic background provides visitors and residents alike with nearly unlimited choices for adventure, fun and, yes, romance!

Ottawa
Flowers are the symbol of love and romance. Nowhere in Canada will you find a more resplendent display of beautiful flowers than at Ottawa's annual Tulip Festival. A 15-kilometre trail through Ottawa and Gatineau will take lovers past millions of tulips and provide access to related venues between May 5 and 23.

If the way to the heart of your mate is through his/her stomach, you won't want to miss Ottawa's "Some Like it Haute" package. It includes two nights' accommodation, a culinary demonstration at Le Cordon Bleu Paris Ottawa Culinary Arts Institute, a coupon book for Rideau Centre, dinner for two at Signatures and more.

More romance Ottawa-style:
Fairmont Chateau Laurier
National Arts Centre (follow this up with a stroll along Rideau Canal)

Saint John
In the mood for romance, Victorian-style? Saint John, established in 1785, is Canada's oldest incorporated city and, as such, has the irresistible echo of the romance of the past.

Consider a stay in the home of New Brunswick's former premier, Judge John B.M. Baxter -- the Dufferin Inn in Saint John. Built in the late 1800s, the Dufferin Inn offers its guests theatre packages, anniversary specials, pampering packages and wedding packages.

Guests at Saint John's Inn on the Cove & Spa are romanced by the twice daily power of the mighty Bay of Fundy tides, where the world's highest tides sometimes reach the height of a four-storey building.

"It's the pulse of this area that affects the total environment," says manager Willa Mavis. The spa uses seaweed and smoothed stones from the Bay of Fundy for its unique spa therapy.

Quebec City
It's spring and a young man's heart turns to love...and, if you're in Quebec, sugar shacks. For an explanation of what a sugar shack is and where you can find one in Quebec, click here.

Quebec City's European charm and architecture can be most romantically viewed with the old-world charm of a horse-drawn carriage ride, for rent at Place d'Armes or on rue d'Auteuil, near the St-Louis Gate.

Top off your day with an overnight stay at Le Chateau Bonne Entente, Quebec City's elegant five star hotel -- don't forgo the spa treatment!
