Great homemade baby food

Lots of us would like to prepare homemade food for our babies, but are too intimidated to try. The authors of The Baby's Table: Over 100 Easy, Healthy and Homemade Recipes for the Pickiest, Most Deserving Eaters on the Planet (Random House Canada, 2004) are out to prove that it's easier than we may think.

The book, cowritten by Brenda Bradshaw, a teacher, and Dr. Lauren Bramley, a family physician, is filled with healthy recipes, none of which include processed ingredients or added sugar or salt. Recipes such as Caribbean-Style Cottage Cheese (mashed papaya mixed with cottage cheese) and Baja Chicken Salad (chicken, avocado, grated cheese and cilantro) are organized according to age and then further divided by content (fruit, red meat, pasta, etc.). In addition, the authors include weekly and monthly meal planners, growth and development charts, and tips that cover such topics as the benefits of beta-carotene and choosing safe fish.

The recipes are all based on the latest nutritional research, and comply with the current Canadian guidelines for infant feeding. Better still, they can be produced with nothing more than a steamer, a blender and a little advance planning.
