I am a single mother of a one-year-old daughter. I am trying very hard not to use "no" unless it is an extremely important situation, so as not to desensitize her to the word. We live with my mother to make babysitting easier. How do I train my negative mother not to say no constantly?

If you have a question for any of our experts, please visit our Just Ask page. This is a very difficult situation. It's one thing trying to change your own behaviour, but trying to change your mother's habits is something entirely different. I'd suggest you have a chat with your mother at a time when you're feeling calm. Explain your goals and thank your mother for supporting you in this effort. Nonetheless, your smart little baby will pick up on the positive messages you're trying to instill. Keep up the good work!
