From trike to bike

Help your child make the transition from trike to bike.

If they have mastered pedalling and steering on a trike, most little kids are ready for a bike. The following tips will make the transition smooth.

• Choose a bike that fits. Your child should be able to place his feet flat on the ground, knees slightly bent, while on the seat.

• Use training wheels. Bikes with them are just as easy to ride as tricycles but are safer because they have brakes.

• The training wheels should allow your child to tip slightly from side to side while sitting  on the bike, teaching him how to balance.

• Gradually raise the training wheels so he is forced to balance the bike more on his own with each change.

• When your child graduates out of training wheels, run with him while he pedals and guide him by the shoulders, so he can feel when he leans to one side and can learn to adjust.

Reminder:
Start training in playgrounds or on paths and make sure your child wears safety gear, such as a helmet, and is conscious of traffic.
