5 famous Canadian moms we love

By

From Nelly Furtado to, yes, Rebecca Eckler, here are just a few Canadian yummy mummies that we think are stellar.
Famous Canadian moms we love
1. Nelly Furtado
This gorgeous pop star from Victoria, B.C., has been heating up the music charts, but she still keeps it real with her daughter, Nevis. Nelly Furtado has gone on record many times to say how having had a baby made her feel more, not less, confident about her body and sexy curves. And unlike other celebrity moms (ahem, Britney Spears) she loves singing the praises of spending time with her little one. Her hit song may be Promiscuous, but this devoted and busy stellar single mama sounds like she is anything but.

2. Sarah McLachlan
A soulful songbird from Halifax, Sarah McLachlan's beautiful ballads have been playing on the radio for more than a decade. When she was pregnant with her first child, India Ann Sushil Sood, McLachlan lost her mother to cancer. She took a long hiatus from recording, explaining it thus to One Way Magazine: "I was just living my life. I lost a mother, and I became a mother," she said. All moms can relate to that.

3. Mary-Jo Eustace
Unfortunately, Mary-Jo has been made more famous as of late by the embarrassing antics of her ex-husband, Dean McDermott, who publicly left her for Tori Spelling, than by her role as the hilarious glamazon co-host of '90s cooking show "What's For Dinner." One thing she deserves to be more famous for: being a great mom to son Jack and baby daughter Lola. This writer visited her at home many years ago, pre-breakup, for a feature story on her house in Style at Home magazine. She was the picture of the beaming, proud mom, showing me a photo of Jack she kept on her bedside table and talking about what a sweetheart her little guy was. Unfortunately, the bigger guy did not turn out to be so much of a keeper.

4. Rebecca Eckler
Sure, Toronto-born, Calgary-based Rebecca Eckler gets help from a nanny with her daughter Rowan, and isn't exactly struggling to make ends meet, what with her successful fiancé and all. But you have to hand it to her, she's tackled some tough (one could say humiliating) issues publicly, in her books and blog. Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, obsessing over pregnancy weight gain, falling for another guy while pregnant are just some of the no-holds-barred situations she's revealed about her own life. Not many moms would have the guts to tell that to the whole of Canada, let alone their own family members. Whether we agree with her decisions is irrelevant; we love that she makes us laugh about the unapologetic, crazy, tough, judgmental, rewarding world of motherhood. Check out her blog here.

5. Shania Twain
Do you know anything about Shania Twain's son? Exactly. This Windsor, Ont.-born beauty holds the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist, has chiseled abs to kill for, and obviously, bales of cash. But does she go around showing off in public or misbehaving? Not at all -- she leads a very private life with her husband and son (who, for the record, is named Eja, pronounced Asia, born in 2001). But the birth of her own son was not the first time Twain was cast in the role of mother. When her parents died in a car crash, she looked after her siblings until they were old enough to care for themselves. We love that she's a real woman who's been through hardships in life that the average woman can relate to. Plus, she has chosen to live life outside of the public eye even though she clearly loves performing for people.
