“My three-year-old won't eat!”
Many parents worry when young children refuse to eat what's on their plates. Relax! Studies show that when parents consistently offer a variety of healthy foods, even picky eaters typically choose a nutritious and balanced diet for themselves over time. Here are some tips to make mealtime more pleasant.
1. Have meals and snacks at regular times so your child's body anticipates being fed.
2. Offer nutritious snacks between meals, but don't let children fill up before mealtime.
3. Allow your child to help plan and prepare meals. It takes longer but encourages her interest in food.
4. Make food child-friendly. Be creative. Colourful plates, imaginative names for foods and playful presentations add fun and increase the chance of capturing the interest of picky eaters. (Find inspiration from these 65+ kid-friendly recipes!)
5. Offer food you know your child will eat and occasionally add something new. Encourage and praise his willingness to “just try it.” Don't expect more.
If you have serious concerns about your child's weight or growth, consult your doctor.
