Paint the backyard
This is the winter version of drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Fill spray bottles with water and different shades of food colouring – try to avoid getting it on your clothing – and help your child "paint" using the snow as her canvas.
Go on a winter scavenger hunt
Make a list of objects you want your children to search for, such as twigs, pinecones or berries. Once they've collected everything, reward their efforts with a small prize – and a steaming mug of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.
Build snow critters
Help kids sculpt an outdoor animal such as a rabbit or squirrel. Use stones, old leaves and twigs for eyes, ears and whiskers. Leave a path of untouched snow leading up to your creation, then have kids make the animal's tracks by hopping like a bunny or lumbering like a bear.
