Mothers do so much for their families throughout the year that only one day to celebrate them out of 365 somehow just doesn't seem to be enough. Likewise, gifts and material things often don't even begin to convey the love and appreciation that children and spouses want to show to moms. This year we talked to mothers about what they really want for Mother's Day, and it turns out the age-old saying is true: it really is the thought that counts.
Written sentiments
My favourite from kids is a card, handmade with no help! And from my husband, the same thing, a card! Something simple to acknowledge his appreciation of what I do as a mom.

A mommy break
I think the best Mother's Day gift Cory and the kids ever gave me was some time where I didn't have to be a mom! A couple of years ago, he took the kids to my in-laws' for the day (on Mother's Day) so I could plant my garden. I spent the day just hanging out in my yard, digging in the dirt and eating a leisurely (and uninterrupted!) lunch -- all things I love to do. They were gone for about eight hours -- it was fantastic!
Bonus idea: For all your readers out there who have friends who are single moms, give those single moms a card to tell them what a good job they're doing. They likely don't hear it very often, and with no partner around to provide daily support, they will probably appreciate it a lot.

A soak in the tub
The best Mother's Day gift would be a big bubble bath with no kids -- does that count? I have been given so much bubble bath but never have time to use it.

Family time
I think it would be so nice to be able to sleep in and get up when I want to get up! Maybe even have breakfast in bed! I'd also like to wake up to a clean house and then spend a wonderful day together at a park near the water (enjoy a beautiful day together that costs nothing). Our schedules seem so hectic all the time; we tend not to make enough time to spend together as a family doing the simple things. Now that would be an amazing Mother's Day to me.

A plethora of ideas
From my husband, Frank, a day of doing nothing and a foot massage.
From my daughter, Briana, a recording of her reading a poem of her choice or singing one of her favourite songs.
Also, since Briana makes so much art, I would really appreciate her and her dad collecting the best pieces in a scrapbook and presenting it to me as a memento, thereby also getting rid of some loose-leaf clutter around the house.
Last year Frank and Briana rushed out and got fresh croissants (chocolate, my fave) at Pain Perdu and made me breakfast in bed -- always appreciated. Briana also collected wildflowers from the garden (including dandelions) and placed them in a small vase for me at breakfast. She made paper flowers at school and included them in the vase, too.
