This is a recipe handed down in our family. The secret ingredient that most people will not guess is the condensed milk! Serve this with a green salad and you'll be a hit. Every Christmas Eve, all of our relatives visit our home for the festivities and to enjoy this special meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups sliced red potatoes 4 cups sliced red potatoes
  • 3 large thinly sliced spanish onions 3 large thinly sliced spanish onions
  • 1 can condensed milk 1 can condensed milk
  • 10 slices frying ham , thinly sliced, cut in quarters10 slices frying ham, thinly sliced, cut in quarters
  • 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese
  • salt , optionalpinch salt, optional
  • pepper , optionalpinch pepper, optional
  • 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup milk

Preparation

Peel onions and red potatoes; slice thinly. Grease a 9" x 11" casserole dish. Place a layer of potatoes on the bottom,sprinkle with salt and pepper, followed by a layer of onions, and then a layer of ham. Alternate the layers until the casserole dish is filled. Pour the can of condensed milk evenly over the casserole. Pour the milk over the top. Top with the grated cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for about one hour. Test to see if the potatoes are cooked by stabbing with a fork. Serve at once. Leftovers must be placed in refrigerator and can be microwaved.
