The signs of bullying

Emotional and behavioural signs of being bullied
Afraid to go to school or other activities.
Appears anxious, unhappy, irritable.
Displays negativity and low self-esteem.
Complains of feeling unwell (headaches and stomachaches).
Disinterested in activities, poor school performance.
Loses things, needs money, is hungry after school.
Has injuries, bruising, damaged clothing or articles.
Has trouble sleeping.
Threatens to hurt himself/herself or others.
May appear isolated from the peer group.

Relationship signs of being bullied
Parents may be overprotective, restrictive.
Siblings may bully child at home.
Isolated and few friends at school or in neighbourhood.
Teachers may be unaware of child’s strengths and challenges, and are therefore unresponsive to needs.
Has few opportunities to shine and show talents at home, at school or in the community (positive power).

Emotional and behavioural signs of bullying others
Aggressive toward parents, siblings, pets and friends.
Shows little concern for others’ feelings.
Displays bossy and manipulative behaviour.
Has possessions or money with unexplained origins.
Secretive about activities.
Holds a positive view of aggression.
Easily frustrated and quick to anger.
Does not recognize impact of his/her behaviour.

Relationship signs of bullying others

Parents may model use of power and aggression by yelling, hitting or rejecting child.
Siblings may bully child at home.
Parents may model use of power and aggression with each other.
Child has friends who bully and are aggressive.
Child has trouble standing up to peer pressure.
Teachers or coaches may model use of power and aggression by yelling, excluding or rejecting.
Has few opportunities to shine and show talents at home, at school or in the community (positive power).
