Remember the cool Mother's Day gifts we made, back in elementary school: the hauntingly beautiful mail organizer, cut out of paper plates and painted in art class; the clunky lump of clay pounded with dimpled knuckles and fashioned into a less-than-dainty candy dish? Mom oohed and aahed over our creations and proudly displayed them around the house, for all to see.
Now that we are all grown up and Mom is past the age when a white-water rafting trip would be considered a good time, finding the perfect gift can be challenging. Here are some suggestions:
1. Fresh-cut flowers or plants
Colourful, delicately scented flowers are delightful. Whether used as a table centrepiece or placed on a bedroom dresser, fresh flowers brighten up any room. Make sure Mom has a large vase, with a solid base, to avoid tipping accidents. For a gift that keeps on giving, have a local florist deliver seasonal blossoms to your lucky mom once a month.
2. Fruit basket
Growing up, it was Mom who reminded us to eat properly. Why not reverse roles and show up on Mother's Day with an appetizing basket of assorted fruit? To help Mom get her vitamins all year long, arrange for regular deliveries of her fibre-rich favourites to her front door.
3. Tickets to cultural events
Going to the theatre, symphony or movies can be a real treat. Make it an evening out with Mom or offer her a gift of two tickets so she can invite a friend along.
4. Books
Your mom's favourite author has just published a new book? Purchase a copy directly from the writer -- with an autograph. It will be a cherished keepsake. Books on tape are fun too.
5. Gift certificate for a clothes-shopping spree, and a helping hand
Choosing clothes for Mom is not recommended. But taking her to a favourite boutique or the mall is a great idea. She can choose her preferred styles, sizes and colours while you offer assistance in cramped changing rooms, if needed.
