One Sunday Morning
(William Morrow, 2005)
By Amy Ephron
When a group of friends gather for a regular bridge-playing session, some of them see a mutual acquaintance walk out of a hotel across the street with a man who is engaged to be married -- it seems like the twosome have spent the night together. What follows is a journey of speculation and intrigue as a mini mystery unfolds and characters battle between responding to their senses of duty and resisting their urges to gossip.
Societal constraints are challenged throughout as characters grapple with their personal desires and what's publicly deemed as "proper" behaviour. But one thing's certain: nothing is as it seems. One Sunday Morning is a delightful and quick read, complete with a head-scratching ending that'll have you leafing through the book again to make sense of its surprising finale. Although you won't be left with a neatly tied-up ending, you'll be contemplating this book long after you've finished reading it.
