The Outlander (House of Anansi Press, 2007) by Gil Adamson

Women fleeing solo across the Canadian West in 1903 were a rarity, but desperate measures are in order if you're a young woman who’s leaving everything behind her – including a dead husband – and is trying to keep one step ahead of the law. The distraught, 19-year-old widow crosses paths with all manner of unsavoury, greedy, lascivious characters, as well as a few who are honest and helpful. Adamson won this year's Amazon.ca First Novel Award for The Outlander.
