Spring Break -- two words that have kids leaping with joy as vacation begins, but then all too often they end up whining, "I'm bored" before the week is even halfway through. Most children need plenty of stimulation to keep them occupied, but this doesn't have to mean big budget vacations or cash guzzling amusements. It just takes a bit of imagination to keep the little darlings happy and to stop them -- and you -- from climbing the walls.
Check out your community
Sometimes the best resources are right under your nose. Local community centres offer a wealth of activities and camps for kids, at surprisingly low costs. Don't forget to check out public pools, ice rinks and museums, as they also have spring break activities on the go.
Take it outside -- whatever the weather
Whether you live in the balmy West Coast, or the big chill of the far north, do yourself a favour and get some fresh air action. A bracing hike through local trails can be thrilling, while if you're up to your armpits in snow; tobogganing, or snowshoeing will put some colour in your cheeks. Embracing the great outdoors helps get everybody moving, and is a chance to spend quality time together -- it's much better than being slumped in front of the TV.
Pool your resources
They say two heads are better than one -- so how about several? Get together with other parents and arrange to take charge of the kids and activities for one day of the week each? This way kids get a fresh family spin on their holiday, and it's perfect for parents who can't take the week off work.
