My husband and I are embarking on a "healing separation" -- where we are trying to redefine a new relationship instead of going the divorce route. Are you aware of any literature on this type of separation? Also, can you provide the name of a good marriage therapist in Edmonton, Alberta?
Dear Creative Un-Coupling;
I am increasingly hearing from couples who are choosing a variety of parenting and living arrangements with a view to minimizing the painful impacts of divorce and separation when a relationship is no longer workable. While I grieve with you the ending of your marriage, I applaud your desire to achieve healing and new possibilities for a different kind of connecting. This will no doubt support your individual well-being and that of children and family who may be involved. Author Laura Davis has written a book on the topic of redefining a variety of estranged relationships entitled, I Thought We'd Never Speak Again (2002, HarperCollins). The book contains a number of assessment tools and questionnaires for discussion starters and may be helpful for you in setting parameters for your mediations. To speak with a counsellor in your area who may be skilled in separation negotiation and able to help you to discuss forgiving and blessing each other for the journey ahead, visit www.marriageandfamily.ca
