NYFW 2015 backstage beauty: Alexander Wang

Fashion weeks aren't just about beautifully crafted clothing, people watching and spotting emerging talent—and trends. One of the major highlights is the backstage beauty looks, which take hours of preparation prior to the brief 15 minute runway shows. The most anticipated (and by far coolest) designer presenting at New York Fashion week is Alexander Wang, which took place yesterday—with front row attendees such as Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and wee toddler North. You read that right, a toddler sat front row at one of the most major show at fashion week... Screen Shot 2015-02-15 at 12.44.15 AM Wang's signature style is casually cool downtown style with  elements of rocker grunge and a pinch of French woman sophistication, just a pinch. This season, he built his collection around the subculture of goths, the clothing was a little different, very gutsy and all black, well almost. The makeup look, spearheaded by artist Diane Kendal for NARS Cosmetics, mirrored his garments, the beauty direction was moody, raw and lived in. I must say, not a look anyone would really want to recreate at home— no foundations, no blush, no mascara, no lip products. The colour that did land on the models faces was NARS Agile Noir Velvet Shadow Stick (coming out in the fall), NARS Eye Paint in Transvaal and NARS Eye Duo in Bellissima. Together they created the lived in eye look, not quite smoky, more of a wash on the lids and under eyes. Inspired by heavy metal, lead hair artist Guido Palau for Redken, described the hair as a "nightmare, but not in a pretty way," and we'd have to agree with him. Not wearable, and veering on the artistic side, not so much on the beauty-looks-to-try-at-home side. Screen Shot 2015-02-15 at 1.03.59 AM Michelle Sanders, lead nail artist for Essie created the nail look which was by far the most wearable and dare I say pretty part of the Alexander Wang beauty look. No nail art here, things were kept streamlined with a polish named Jazz, a neutral creamy beige-taupe colour that has been in the collection for year, "Alexander Wang is putting it back on the map," says Saunders. "It feels  little ghostly, which goes with his theme of the gothic revival." Next, Matte About You, a  mattifying top coat coated the nails.
