Summer beauty essentials for cottaging, camping and glamping

When it comes to the great outdoors during summer, we're big fans of the less-is-more approach to beauty. Camping in the woods, a weekend cottaging or a romantic glamping getaway is the perfect opportunity to ditch your beauty routine in favour of a makeup-less face and air-dried locks.

That being said, you might find yourself in need of a couple beauty essentials on your summer vacations to keep you clean, protected and still feeling like your fabulous self.

Most importantly, you need sun protection, so make sure to read up on our guide to sun safety and find the SPF that's right for you. You'll also need to consider insect repellent. Learn how to protect yourself against bugs—and what to do when they bite.

Next, you need to consider where you're going and what you're doing. Headed to a cottage with all the amenities? You probably just need a condensed version of your existing beauty stash. Headed out portaging? Think of small, compact items that won't create waste.

Wherever you're headed, here are our beauty picks for your summer getaway.

Save your shoes

If you're planning on camping for a couple of days, these might not make your packing list (too much garbage to carry), but we highly recommend stashing them in your car to give your footwear a good wipe before re-entering civilization. Sneaker Rescue wipes, $7.50, getoutsideshoes.com.

Keep clean

Gone are the days when you need to reach for leaves to wipe after going to the bathroom outdoors—and you needn't haul around toilet paper either. These wipes—formulated for women—are pH balanced and 98% natural. The best part? They're biodegradable and compostable. SweetSpot Labs Vanilla Blossom On-The-Go Wipes, $13, sweetspotlabs.com.

A touch of colour

Planning for a nice dinner at the cottage? Forget your makeup bag and ditch any heavy eye makeup for a product that will give you a touch of colour on your lips and cheeks. We're partial to NudeStix's shimmer finish pencil in "Sin"—the perfect complement to your dewy summer skin. NudeStic Lip + Cheek Pencil in "Sin," $28, sephora.com.

Save face

Wipes are definitely the name of the game when it comes to compact beauty packing. Though you may not need to clean off makeup, a makeup removing cleansing cloth will still make sure you get rid of dirt and sweat in an easy one-step motion. Just remember to check whether they're biodegradable before leaving them at your campsite. Philosophy Purity Facial Cleansing Cloths, $20, sephora.com.

Untangled

If you're headed to a more rustic cottage (think: no showers) chances are your hair is not going to be its usual soft and conditioned self. Try a detangling spray for your post lake swim to keep knots at bay while still rocking a natural look. L'Occitane En Provence Revitalizing Detangling Spray, $28, loccitane.com.
