It seems the beauty world’s love affair with nail art is far from over. From monogrammed nails to the return of the “signature nail” style, this season is all about making a statement on the tips of our fingers. We caught up with Essie Canada’s Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark who shared her expert tips on the hottest nail looks for spring.

1. Orange

Essie nail polish in Meet Me at Sunset, $9, essie.ca.)

"This nail colour is bold, fresh and impossible to ignore,” says Remark. To get the look straight off the runway, Remark suggests using a true tangerine-toned shade. If that’s a little too fluorescent for your taste, try easier-to-wear orange-y red.

2. Lilac

This romantic colour dominated the runways on not just nails but clothing and accessories as well. “I predict this to be the new millennial pink,” says Remark. We also love that this colour goes with everything and suits all skin tones.

3. Glitter

Nail Bauble Gift Set in On the Naughty List, $14, sephora.com. L'Oreal Colour Riche Gold Dust nail polish in Diamond in the Rough, $9, lorealparis.ca)

“Whether it was worn on the cuticle at Jeremy Scott, the base at Tom Ford or speckled across the entire nail like at Anna Sui, glitter made a triumphant return from its absence last season,” says Remark. To achieve this look, she recommends using coarse, highly reflective glitter polish to achieve blinding results.

4. Primary Colours

Orange isn’t the only bright colour trending for Spring. Remark says true reds, bold blues and golden yellows can be worn together or alone to give the nail a great sporty feel. Her tip? "Bright colours mercilessly shine a light on even the tiniest of chips," says Remark. "I'd recommend you either choose a long-wearing polish like Essie's Gel Couture or use a longwear topcoat."

5. Fun French tips

The classic French manicure got a fresh update this spring with many designers swapping in bold colours for the traditional white tip. “Using bold colours or patterned tips make French manicures a great negative space treatment,” says Remark. “Polish a super thin line across the tip of each nail in aqua or teal like we saw at Alice + Olivia this season.”

 6. Monogrammed nails

If bright colours aren’t your thing, make a statement (literally) with monogrammed nail art. “Initial nail art was featured on many runways this season, notably Monse and Helmut Lang,” says Remark. To get the look, she suggests to polish the letters of your name on each finger or polish your initials on your first, or last two fingers. It’s a fun and easy statement, whether atop your favourite nail colour or on its own.

7. Signature nails

You may recognize this nail art trend from seasons past. The signature nail trend (which involves putting nail art on only one nail) is back in style but with a new look. “What makes this old trend new again is that many designers opted to have not just a signature nail, but only one nail polished,” says Remark. To avoid this style looking unintentional or sloppy, Remark says to put a shiny topcoat on every nail.
