Bobs for every hair type

Carefree and bob go together like warm weather and fun. Here's the short story on the best 'do -- whatever your hair type.

By Janine Falcon

Keep your bob looking its best with these helpful hints tailored to your hair type.

Curly
Cut: If you have naturally curly hair, layers should be cut a little longer than where you want your style to land when it dries.
Styling solution: Apply a curl enhancer to damp hair. Using a medium setting on your blow dryer, scrunch hair in your hand and direct the airflow to that spot only. Give hair a few seconds to retain its curl, then release. Use the blow dryer until hair is 70 to 80 percent dry, then spritz with a curl-lock hair spray to finish.

Straight
Cut: Naturally straight hair is obviously ideal for a swingy straight bob. Texturizing and layers add movement and interest. Wavy-haired girls who are addicted to this sleek look need the right products and tools.
Styling solution: Use a paddle brush rather than a round brush to straighten hair while blow-drying. Direct the airflow from root to tip to keep hair cuticles flat and finish blow-drying with a blast of cool air. For the supersleek straight look, use a flatiron. Add a touch of silicone-based serum for extra shine and to lock in style.

Wavy
Cut: Wavy hair needs layers to avoid a pyramid-shaped 'do. To enhance the waves and to provide movement, ends should be slightly tapered.
Styling solution: Even when naturally dried, wavy hair needs a bit of help to look good. If you love the tousled look, try a styling product that adds texture to get that carefree just-off-the-beach style. Use on wet or dry hair, finger comb or fluff into shape and go.

Frizzy
Cut: In the summer frizzy hair is a problem for almost everyone wherever there is humidity. Superfrizzy hair needs light layering and bevelling to keep the style softly controlled.
Styling solution: Whether your hair is straight, wavy or curly, you need a silicone-based product to lock hair's natural moisture in and keep the humidity out. Very curly hair needs a hydrating curl enhancer, such as K-Pak Curl Revitalizer or Redken Fresh Curls, then an anti-frizz product to finish.

Limp
Cut: Limp hair needs some layering to add fullness. Avoid straight edges, razor cutting and texturizing -- such techniques will make limp hair look thin.
Styling solution: Straight and particularly fine hair can look oily and lank in humid summer weather. Resist the urge to shampoo every day -- overcleansing will strip your hair. Instead try simply rinsing your hair on day two. Volumizing products will provide extra body.
